A simple version of socratic seminar rubrics labeled for self-evaluation and peer evaluation. These are to be used when conducting a socratic seminar to discuss a piece of reading (fiction, nonfiction, poetry...)
I use socratic seminar in this way: I divide the class in two groups. They become an inner and outer ring of students. First the outer ring discusses the text with the outer ring watching their assigned partner taking notes to give them feedback. They discuss for a certain amount of time, which I start as low 3-5 minutes and work up. They break after that time to get feedback from their partner for a few mintues. Then, students resume their discussion, hopefully taking into account their partners feedback. After we've gone through this process once with the inner ring, the groups switch places and the outer ring gets the chance to discuss in the same format. (discuss, feedback, discuss). At the end, students give their partner and evaluation form and they evaluate themselves.
