Students complete extensive research on the debate behind whether vertebrates should be kept in captivity or not and then create a PowerPoint to document their thinking, research and arguments. Then students participate in a fish-bowl style socratic seminar to discuss this topic.
As is clear through the rubric, the goal isn't for students to demolish each other's perspective or thinking but to grapple with the ethics behind aquariums and marine exhibits. This activity was one of the highlights from my Marine Biology class and the conversations were incredibly rich. I will also load a PowerPoint that accompanies this Socratic Seminar for your use as well.
