This is my third year holding a Socratic Seminar on our community, so I have fine-tuned this considerably. Directions for you, are of course, included here. Students prepare for this seminar by bringing in articles about the community. I have provided several graphic organizers for you to choose between, as they read, annotate, and consider the issues at hand. Once students know their articles well, introduce this project with the central handout. Go over what this Socratic Seminar will look and sound like. I have sentence frames and levels of questions to support students toward civil, thoughtful, and engaging discussions. Remind students that there is no leader or follower; no one should raise his or her hand. Everything that you need is here, including a sign that you can print out and put on the door. Students will see this as a special day, and administrators will know that your students are engaged in higher-level thinking, speaking, and listening skills!
