Product Description
A Socratic seminar is a “collaborative, intellectual dialogue facilitated by open ended questions about a text.” - From the National Paideia Center

A Socratic seminar will always address the CCSS standards for speaking and listening and will extend a lesson to include higher order thinking skills related to and required to meet the Common Core standards.
Reading and writing are always a part of a Socratic seminar.

This seminar is for the text: The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles and is appropriate for grade levels 1-4 and possibly for a gifted kindergarten.

A seminar plan is set of guidelines though the facilitator should always be aware of the conversation of the students and make adjustments as needed.

Ideas, Values: emotion, society, difference, hope, heroism

Standards addressed: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.3.3 Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3.1a Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material; explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3.1b Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3.1c Ask questions to check understanding of information presented, stay on topic, and link their comments to the remarks of others.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3.1d Explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.

This plan includes three choices for the post-seminar activity.
