Lesson Objective: Students will be able to infer Sofia’s character traits by analyzing her actions in Sofia Valdez, Future Prez.

Rigorous text dependent questions promote discussion, allowing students to analyze Sofia's actions as she overcomes obstacles in her quest to get rid of Mount Trashmore and build a park. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to infer her character traits. Two anchor chart options are included to collect text evidence. At the end of the lesson, students will answer the following question independently: How did Sofia achieve her goal? What character traits best describe her? Several differentiated assessment options are included.

**Be sure to check out the preview of this lesson for a more in-depth look at what you’ll get with this 58-page download!**

For the lesson, teacher resources include: teacher guide with skill rationale/teacher language, lesson plan with stopping points, text-dependent questions (and scaffolding questions for each), expected student responses, post-its to print questions and place in book for easy reference during the lesson.

Other student resources included: large, printable form of the essential question, student friendly objective, and questions to post for visual learners.

There are tons of extras and extensions to be used after the lesson for more fun and learning!

  • 5 colorful vocabulary cards and 4 blank cards
  • Student vocabulary graphic organizer to infer meaning of words and provide context clues
  • Vocabulary activity options and photographs representing each word
  • Students infer the theme, or lesson, to be learned from reading Sofia Valdez, Future Prez. Then, record evidence that supports the theme.
  • Students sequence the five most important events the story and place chronologically on the timeline. Then, students practice retelling from beginning to end. Two differentiated options are available.
  • For extra practice as needed, students consider Sofia’s thoughts and actions to complete the character graphic organizer. This may help students who struggle to infer her traits.
  • Students analyze elements of plot by completing the “Somebody…Wanted …But…So…Then” graphic organizer.
  • Students describe how the point of view would change from the vantage point of different characters (Abuelo, Elderly Neighbors, Clerk, 2nd grade students) when Sofia works to build a park in her neighborhood.
  • Students analyze the author’s use of figurative language. For each of the two examples, students respond to the questions in order to infer the meaning. Then, students sketch a picture to support their understanding.
  • Students discuss and respond to interpretive questions. These questions do not have a single correct answer. Instead, students support their claim with text evidence. These questions would be great in a discussion format before students independently write. Four options are included.
  • Students consider a problem in their own neighborhood they would like to improve. Students describe possible solutions, people who can help, and a plan to make it happen.
