PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Do your students have difficulty knowing when to use the soft sounds of "g" and "c"? I created a brother and sister team to help my students learn and internalize the soft "g" and "c" rules. Brother "c" and Sister "g" like to play a special game with their friends "e", "i", and "y". They use their soft sounds only while playing the game with these particular letter friends. My students love when I connect a phonics rule to something they are familiar with, so they very much enjoy learning about Brother "c" and Sister "g".

Contents of this packet:

Page 3: Meet Brother “c” and Sister “g” in color
I copy this sheet and place it in my students’ folders. We
refer back to this rule sheet often.

Page 4: Meet Brother “c” and Sister “g” in black/white

Page 5: Hard “c” and Soft “c” Words Venn Diagram

Page 6: Hard “g” and Soft “g” Words Venn Diagram

Pages 7-8: Soft “c” and Soft “g”- Show What You Know! #1 & #2

Page 9: Soft “c” Words path- Help the princess make it home!

Page 10: Soft “g” Words path- Help the giraffe make it to his favorite

Pages 11-12: Soft “c” and Soft “g” Sorting Activities #1 & #2
For this activity, students are asked to cut and paste word
tiles into the appropriate boxes. I love using cut and paste
even with my older students because they treat the glue as
a “commitment.” They really think about their answers
before they glue them down!

Pages 13-15: Color by Key #1, #2, #3- Students color sections of a
picture based on their word type: hard “c”, soft “c”, hard “g”,
soft “g”.

Page 16-18: Cloze It Up With Hard and Soft “c” and “g”- Cloze
Sentences #1, #2, #3

Pages 19-20: Answer Keys

Note to Teacher: Soft and hard sounds are both included throughout this packet because it is important that students are able to distinguish between hard and soft sounds. When students learn a phonics rule in isolation, they tend to use it incorrectly. They need examples of the rule, as well as non-examples.
