Logic Puzzles are an excellent way to help your students develop their critical thinking skills and this puzzle is no exception. My students love these puzzles - sometimes I use them as a bellringer or warm-up, at times I use them as a transition activity - in particular for students that finish their work early. They are also great as a part of emergency sub plans - I find that substitutes appreciate having a multitude of materials from which to use along with your lesson plans for the day.
This puzzle may have a softball theme, but it is suitable for any content - especially math.
This puzzle uses hits, at bats, and asks students to calculate six player's batting averages.
The skills needed for this puzzle are basic arithmetic - greater than, less than, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. An understanding of decimals smaller than one is necessary as well since batting averages are reported as numbers such as 0.336 - but a younger student could do this puzzle with some support.
Suitable for any content - every student in any class benefits from improving their critical thinking! This puzzle is probably most suited for grades 5 - 8; younger students could complete this with some support, older students will still enjoy the challenge - they'll just finish a bit sooner :)
Included in the puzzle is a 2-up version to save paper, a one puzzle option with blank space for working, and a one puzzle option with a logic grid, and a separate page with the two writing prompts.
Of course, an answer key is also included :)
