This colorful and detailed PowerPoint and bundle covers the composition of soil, formation of soil, soil horizons, soil pH, reading a soil triangle, and plant macronutrients.
Soil is a mixture of rock and mineral, organic matter, and living things. The rock and mineral sediments are sand, silt and clay. The amount of each component determines the type of soil. Soil type is determined using a soil triangle. This bundle's PPT includes how to use a soil triangle and the bundle has a practice worksheet . Reading a soil triangle and determining soil type is practiced again in the Soil Lab.
Soil pH is very important to plant growth, so this is discussed in the PowerPoint and in the lab. But, sometimes, you want to grow plants that are not suitable for the soil that you have, so augmenting soil pH is also covered.
There are hundreds of soil types and subtypes worldwide, but we will look at three generic types: pedalfer , pedocal, and laterites . There is even a cute song link to help with subtypes of soils.
Formation of soil is a slow process and as soil matures, it begins to have distinct layers called horizons. The horizons covered are O horizon (organic), A horizon (topsoil), B horizon (subsoil), C horizon, and R horizon (bedrock). The Cookie Soil Horizon Activity is a fun and yummy way for students to create a model of their own soil horizon.
Finally macronutrients for plants are discussed. Plants need six macronutrients: carbon and oxygen (from the atmosphere), hydrogen and oxygen (from water) and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (from the soil). Nitrogen is need for plant growth and leaves, potassium is needed for healthy stems and plant resistance to drought and freezing temperatures, and phosphorus is needed for flowering and fruiting (reproduction). Not all soil has the correct nutrients so fertilizers are also discussed. These nutrients are also discussed in the Soil Lab.
