Topics: Agriculture, Soil, Food, Experimental Design
This is not the APES version of the lab, where the students set up their own experimental design. This is a simpler version - the procedure is completely laid out for them (I use it for regular Environmental classes, not AP). All the teacher needs to do is purchase seeds (I use green beans, watermelon, pumpkin, pinto beans, but anything will work well really) and have the different salinity waters made up.
No measurements included, but you could add that in - I only have them record the % of seeds that are germinating. Includes graphing practice. Students must connect the objective/procedure to their results.
The students love watching the seeds grow over the 10 days. I hang the bags in the window, but that isn't necessary - they don't even need to be in the sun really.
