Sojourner Truth, Her Life and Times is designed as a multi-purpose informational reading and writing unit for upper elementary students. This resource is a good supplement to use anytime, but is particularly relevant during Black History Month or Women’s History Month.
Each of the two texts can be used alone (but in sequence): they could be assigned as the teacher wishes: in class over a couple of days or more, as homework, as independent projects, etc. The two texts are chronological; Part 1 is titled “Sojourner Truth’s Early Life” and Part 2 “Sojourner Truth, Activist”. Each text has a page of questions (inference, factual, and opinion) as well as a page of vocabulary and language use work and a short creative writing assignment. There is a one-page cloze activity using the twelve vocabulary words from Parts 1 and 2 (introduced in the work sheet for each part) and a short quiz that consists of six multiple-choice questions and one short answer question.
