Use these plans and printables to guide your students through an inquiry-based lesson showing distances in the solar system. The lesson plan uses explicit teaching methods and engagment strategies to ensure that the students are participating in guided practice.
One page of concise, step-by-step lesson plans is included.
Two pages of printables are included which provide:
- Student Instructions
- Data Chart for Model and Graph
- Thought-Provoking Questions
- Graph for Student-Created Bar Graphs
Your students will relate the distance of the Earth from the sun to the distances of other planets in our solar system from the sun.
They will also practice measuring and graphing using centimeters.
They will create a model with a long piece of paper to show the distances between planets in our solar system.
First, they will measure, mark and label each planet on the paper.
Second, they will graph the measurements using a bar graph.
Finally, they will write to explain the characteristics of each planet on cards.
