This Solar System Introduction to the Planets Gallery Walk Tour and Graphic Organizer activity includes two versions of a visual graphic organizer that the students use to take notes on interesting information about the planets! The student notes pages can be taped together to create a full graphic of the solar system including the asteroid belt.
There are two mini-posters for each planet and one for the main asteroid belt that contain vital information, interesting information, a diagram and relevant pictures (of the Gods that influenced the planets' names). Print out the mini posters and hang them around your classroom. Tell your students that they are going on a tour of the solar system, hand them their notes pages and send them on their way!
Alternatively, you could use this product by assigning a planet to groups of students and have THEM create a poster displaying the required information... then have the whole class do the gallery walk of all of the posters using the graphic organizer.
There are a few various pieces of information 'missing' from the planet posters (particularly on the 'Blue Square' version of the student notes), which makes for a great enrichment activity as students can research those pieces of information on their own!
Included are also two versions (one with a word bank, one without) of a solar system graphic that you can use as a pre- and post- assessment for whether the students can name the planets in order from the sun.
All ANSWER KEYS are provided!
This could also be a great anticipation activity before your students choose a planet for their Planet Children's Book Research Project. Please also check out my Scaled Solar System Activity : Relative Distances and Sizes of the Planets as a hands-on model-building study of the solar system!
