This 10 page/5 Day Unit is an inquiry-based science program that has the flexibility to adapt to students interest in the topic area of space and the solar system. To assess student understanding in the content area of space and the solar system, I will initiate a KWL on the first day of the mini unit and pass out space journals to each student. I will wrap the KWL chart up on Day 5. In order to further assess students’ initial understanding and to provide a motivational hook, I will set up fun interactive “Space Stations” that the students will use as an introductory activity on the second day. Students will demonstrate and record their understanding at each station. Students at all ability and skill levels will be able to actively participate and learn during this unit. I will use differentiated learning to modify assignments and activities to fit the needs of all of my students and by tapping into multiple intelligences and using varied teaching strategies, all of the students will have an opportunity to learn in their own way.
Small group work and group presentations will benefit the whole class. Hands-on space stations, visual representations, and multimedia presentations will all contribute to a rich and diverse learning environment
This lines up with the Next Generation Science Standards for 5th grade.
