This resource is best used after a modeling activity where students recreate the phases of the moon. I am in the process of creating one of my own, but for now, I highly recommend that you take a look at this resource from the California Academy of Sciences.

This resource is designed to assess students understanding of lunar and solar eclipses, but is not designed to teach them about eclipses. I use this activity as a formative assessment in my classes and have students peer review the CER. I have included a journal page for the upcoming lunar eclipse on January 20th, 2019. I have included connection to the Crosscutting Concepts and Science and Engineering Practices. This activity most closely aligns with

  • Performance Expectation MS-ESS1-1
  • Crosscutting Concept: Scale, Proportion and Quantity
  • Science and Engineering Practices: Engaging in an Argument Using Evidence, Planning and Carrying Out Investigations and Analyzing and Interpreting Data
