This novel study of Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen includes approximately three weeks of activities and analysis of the novel aligned to the Common Core College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards. It is a rather intense historical fiction novel and is not recommended for readers younger than upper elementary.
The novel study includes skills of Inferencing, Citing Text Evidence, Interpreting Figurative Language, Comparing/Contrasting Texts in different forms, Summarizing, Visualizing, Using Context Clues, Producing Clear, Coherent Writing, and Writing Arguments to Support Claims.
Lessons include warm-up questions and quick writes to check for understanding and access prior knowledge. The lessons also utilize a gradual release method by modeling, using guided practice, and using independent practice that can be used for assessment of each skill. Included are graphic organizers and worksheets to support each skill.
Rubrics are included for the assessing students' written analyses of the novel.
A PowerPoint Jeopardy review game is included for a brief review of the novel.
Also included is an end-of-novel assessment including 5 multiple choice questions, 5 short-answer questions, and 1 essay question totaling 25 points.
