This set of novel study activities (part of my Soldier's Heart Novel Unit Bundle
) are perfect higher-level-thinking activities for after reading Gary Paulsen's Civil War novel Soldier's Heart. They're especially great for a gifted classroom!
The first page is a three-part list of 15 discussion questions for a Socratic seminar on the novel. It analyzes the character of the protagonist, Charley, as well as the thought-provoking themes the novel addresses - war, death, maturity, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Students will discuss plot, cause and effect, point of view, and real-world connections. There is a follow-up writing prompt included.
The next pages are a choice board project offering students four creative options for post-reading assessment. They will help students analyze character, plot, setting, and more literary elements as they extend the story and connect to the Civil War time period. (A detailed rubric is included.)
These activities are a great way to integrate a US history curriculum with a language arts novel study!
