My students love this game and always beg me to make another one! Students are placed in groups of four and given one worksheet per round per group. The worksheet has four equations to solve numbered 1-4 and each student is assigned to a number. The difficulty ranges from one-step equations in round 1 to multistep equations requiring the distributive property in round 7. The students write down the problem that is assigned to their number on their own piece of paper and then write only their answers on the shared worksheet. I have the students write their problem down on their own sheet instead of passing around the worksheet because they are racing against other teams. The students have to add all of their answers together and bring the sum to me to see if they are correct (key included). I tell the students if the sum of their answers is correct (if one student has the wrong answer, the sum will be wrong). If the sum is not correct, the students will return to their group and everyone will share how they solved their equations. The students will work together to find the error and return to me with the corrected sum. Once the students have the correct sum, they are given the next worksheet with four additional questions on it and repeat the same process. There are 7 rounds and I usually have a team complete all 7 rounds in about 40 minutes. The students love this activity and it's great practice!
