Description

Solving Equations with the Distributive Property Sum ’Em Activity

Boost student engagement and deepen understanding of multi-step equations using the distributive property with this ready-to-print group activity! Students solve multi-step equations, work in teams, and collaborate to find a cumulative group sum.

🧩 What’s Included

  • Eight sets of cards (four problems in each set) requiring students to solve multi-step equations using the distributive property.
  • Differentiated difficulty levels—some problems require more steps than others, allowing for scaffolded group work.
  • Full answer key included for quick reference and class facilitation.

💡 Classroom Usage Ideas

  • Team-work activity: Organize students into groups of four and hand out one set of cards. After they solve their own cards and compute the group sum, they check in with you before proceeding to the next set.
  • Review day or test prep: Use this activity as a dynamic, collaborative way to review the distributive property ahead of a quiz or assessment.
  • Center/station rotation: Set up the card sets at stations and rotate groups through them; each station focuses on a different difficulty level.
  • Early finisher or challenge mode: Groups that finish correctly can move on to a “bonus” set of harder problems or create their own card for another group.
  • Peer tutoring focus: Since students must check their group sum and self-correct any errors, it naturally promotes peer discussion and problem-solving.

🧠 Why Teachers Love It

  • Turns solving equations into a collaborative, game-style activity rather than traditional worksheets.
  • Encourages student discussion, error-checking, and reasoning as students compare steps and answers within their groups.
  • Saves teacher prep time — simply print the cards, bundle them, and you’re ready to go.
  • Supports aligned standards (e.g., solving linear equations with the distributive property) and shows clear student engagement and interaction.

📌 Concepts Covered

  • Solving multi-step linear equations involving the distributive property
  • Combining like terms, variable isolation, and simplifying expressions
  • Working within a team context to reach a shared solution (group sum)
  • Promoting accuracy and reflection when group sum doesn’t match the expected result

Loved how these cards were differentiated! Students were given these equations randomly and could ask other classmates for help if they received one that was more complex.

I LOVE this activity and can't wait to use it again next year! I used this with my accelerated math 7/8 students, and it was the perfect level of challenge. I think that it would have been a bit too challenging for my regular math 7 students. I love that this resource has students solving problems and then adding up their answers. I had students work in groups to solve these problems and check their sums as they went. The first group to correctly solve all the problems got a prize! Students were VERY engaged during this activity and were working collaboratively in their groups. I love that this activity forced my students to check each others' work!
