This unit is modified from George Hillock's work in the book Teaching argument writing, grades 6-12: supporting claims with relevant evidence and clear reasoning. The materials presented here have been presented at National Writing Project conferences, region writing project conferences, and writing project summer institutes.
The unit takes students from a seemingly simple concept (mysteries) to writing a complex argument (argument of fact). The unit is all inclusive, but can be enhanced by having the Hillocks book.
All materials included will take the teacher approximately four days to cover (model!) not including the writing assignment.
