Proportions Trail

General Information:

Proportions trail is designed to get students up and moving around the room while solving math problems. This self checking activity allows students to work at his/her own pace. Following the trail provides students with a more engaging method to do practice problems than the traditional worksheet full of questions. Also, the check as you go feature ensures students are not completing multiple problems incorrectly without notice. When a student makes an error, the answer he is looking for is not available, which encourages him to go back and revise his work.

Each question is printed and folded along the dotted line and posted throughout the classroom. Each card has an answer that is visible to the students. Once students solve a problem, they go over to the answer that matches their response to write down the next question (printed on the inside of the card). This process continues until the students solve all problems (gets to the end of the "trail").

Additional Suggestions:

Play into the idea that this is a trail and set up a “Ranger Station” for students to visit for help. The station can be manned by the instructor or by students who finish early or have shown mastery of the content.
