In this activity, students will practice solving proportions (including monomial and polynomial variable expressions). When students find the solution to one proportion, they will match the proportion with the solution along the edges. They will continue this process until the entire puzzle is complete and all proportions are solved. Because the students’ activity pieces have been randomized on an output sheet, students are able to cut their own puzzle pieces out without first being exposed to the solution. This means no prep for you! Other ideas for this activity include:
Cut out the pieces and laminate them. Store them, along with the directions, in a file folder for a quick skills practice or enrichment activity for early finishers.
Have students work in groups of 2 to 3 to collaboratively complete the project.
Let students glue their finished puzzle on a piece of colored paper and color/decorate it. Decorate your classroom with the finished products.
For students who work slower, tape every two pieces together so that they only need to do half the problems.
Have students check their work on the back side of the puzzle pieces.
This activity is great for kinesthetic learners and keeps students engaged while they practice their skills. The problems vary in difficulty to ensure an appropriate level of challenge to your students.
