This activity requires students to sort rational equations based on their similarities. Students should discover that, in general, the equations appear in two forms: a proportion that can be solved by cross multiplication and a fraction equal to two terms which is solved by clearing the denominator. Note that cross multiplication should be taught by first providing an explaining of why it works so that students do not mistakenly use the process on other problems where it would be inappropriate to cross multiply (such as addition of rational expressions).
