Hello! Thank you for visiting my "Math Is Not Daunting" store!

This is a project for which students will have the opportunity to write and solve two real world word problems. They will be writing word problems for which they will need to multiply fractions in order to find a solution. Before completing this project, it is ideal that students will have experience with solving fraction multiplication word problems.

For the first word problem, students will create a name to use in the word problem in addition to two fractions and an activity that was completed at the mall. For example, the following is an example of a word problem that could be created using the first word problem format: "Jack spent 1/4 of the day at the mall. Jack spent 1/6 of this time choosing a pair of sneakers. What fraction of the day did Jack spend choosing sneakers?"

For the visual fraction models, students will need to use rulers to create the fractional parts on each side of the provided square in the work space area for the visual fraction models.

A title page is included on page three of this document to use if you are interested in using it as a title for creating posters using students' work.

To complete this project, students need to be able to multiply fractions in different ways. Therefore, this project correlates with 5.NF.6, which is, as stated on the "corestandards" site: "Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem."
