There are three basic methods of solving a system of linear equations or functions that are typically taught in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Math I. They are the Substitution, Elimination and Graphing methods. The attached MS PowerPoint slideshow describes in detail the steps I use to solve a system of linear equations by substitution. It specifies the steps to use to solve a system of 2 equations using the substitution solution method to determine the common solution point for the system of equations. This presentation is classroom-tested. It can be used to initially present the topic in 8th grade math or for review purposes with Algebra I or Math I students (typically 9th graders). This ppt presentation is fully animated to keep the students engaged and the presenter (teacher) can modify the animations as desired. The last slide includes 2 practice examples for the students to complete.
