I created this mini-lesson for my students to help them improve on their problem-solving ability and their ability to recognize math functions in everyday living. The six math functions included are: linear, quadratic, exponential, rational, absolute-value, and radical. The mini-lesson provides a scaffolded, organized method of solving word problems. I created a 4-box method for solving the word problems. At first, we worked on the problems as a class, interactively. Once the students showed confidence, the students worked on them in groups, pairs, or individually. The students enjoyed the problems and problem solving and gained confidence in their ability to solve word problems!
