These problems follow from the “Equations using Fact Families” activity. There are 3 problems using addition or subtraction equations, 6 problems using multiplication or division equations, and 5 mixed problems with no operations indicated.
Students are expected to name the operation, write the equation they use to solve the problem, and rewrite the original equation to verify their solution.
The method of solving the problems, following from the above activity, is to identify the known numbers and write the equation that follows (e.g., “Total – addend = addend” ). This reinforces students’ number sense and understanding of the relationship and relative size of the three numbers in the equation.
The process is identical for both addition-subtraction, and multiplication-division equations.
