This activity is from the idea of Think/ Pair/ Share. Students are first given an equation like x + 3= 9 and told to "think" of the answer. Then they are to tell the person next to them what the answer is and HOW they got that answer. The next step is a second "Pair" idea. They turn to another person next to them and they must "TELL" them how to do it BUT can not SPEAK. Thus forcing them to write down their steps. I tell them they can not use words, only symbols and numbers. Then Share with the class. After these problems, I explain that the writing down the work is how the TELL me they know how to DO it. It is their way to "speak" to me when I am grading. Then there is a practice sheet for students to work on.
