This 24 page activity can be used to introduce students to the concepts of acid rain and global warming as well as reinforce information already presented to students. It also presents specific problems caused by these environmental threats. This activity is designed for an introductory level biology, earth science or environmental studies class. It could also be successfully used with many Middle Level science classes. The packet also could serve as a stand alone activity to be used with a substitute teacher. The causes and major problems caused by acid precipitation and global warming are included in the reading and questions. Four specific cases where species are threatened by these problems such as the Kirkland warbler and Bicknell's thrush are included with the reading passage and questions. Attempts and some successes in the reduction of these these environmental problems are also discussed and assessed.
Because the reading information and associated questions are chunked in this activity, it is easy to modify this activity for use as multiple activities over individual days or to be used whole or in part.
The reading component of this packet contains 36 written response and graphing questions relating to the information in the reading packet forcing students to recall and synthesize the information in the packet. The packet concludes with 19 questions (12 multiple choice and 7 written response questions) on the problems and solutions associated with acid precipitation and global warming. The zip file containing this packet contains the student packet in both word and pdf format. The answer key is included in pdf format as well.
This activity has been correlated to the NGSS Standards and the Common Core Standards. These standards have been specifically listed on the first page of the activity.
