This download includes a visual display for your bulletin board and graphic organizers.
The visual display portion of this can be added to your bulletin board to serve as an anchor chart. The following summary points are included:
Somebody- Main character or important characters
Wanted- what did the character desire or seek?
But- what went wrong?
So- what did the character do about it?
Then- What happened as a result of the character’s actions?
Finally (optional use)- What was the final outcome or resolution?
There are multiple versions of the organizational chart as follows:
1. Step by step reminder and page section for each of the summary points somebody, wanted, but, so, then, and finally (and a version without finally).
2. A 4 day version that is better used with bullet points and the summary points are mentioned as part of the directions at the top of the page (and a version without finally).
3. A 4 day version that is better used with bullet points and the summary points are mentioned as part of the directions at the top of the page, but has an individual day page count and allows for a different book each night (and a version without finally).
4. A 2 day version that provides more room for a more detailed summary and the summary points are mentioned as part of the directions at the top of the page (and a version without finally).
As an example for the class you could watch this 8 minute YouTube video
Cinderella read-a-long: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SOL5wG7t1g
Then you can walk your students through filling out the step by step organizer using Cinderella as the story. Most of my answers are brief, but you would/could have your students fill it out in complete sentences. It would be filled in as follows:
Wanted- to go to the ball
But- her evil stepmother would not allow her to go
So- Cinderella’s fairy god mother showed up and used magic to her a dress and carriage to get to the ball
Then- she dances with the prince but has to leave at midnight and loses her shoe
Finally- the prince uses the shoe to find the girl he was in love with and they get married and live happily ever after.
You could also use the following video from YouTube to explain summarizing to your students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi8RnDjELdc&list=PLIUGTM12eY67917JHceEvKiwuPH4-wPk4
