Students will be introduced to a short story that has a setting, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. After, they will be exposed to how a sonata takes the exact same shape. Students then engage in a listening excerise where they will write a story based off what they hear.
First they will hear the Exposition of a sonata, and write their setting.
Second they will hear the Development section where their rising action, climax, and falling action should take place.
Last students will then hear the Recapitulation of the sonata and write the resolutions of their stories.
A great idea is to let them act out their stories with a few partners charade style as you read them out loud to the class. You could even be playing the sonata they wrote to as you read and they act it out.
