I created this lesson as way for students to explore the similarities between song lyrics and traditional poetic forms. Students will be engaged in a detailed analysis of the lyrics of their favorite song with the goal for them to inductively conclude that lyrics are, in fact, poetic. Plus, they will be motivated (because they love music) to practice poetic analysis. This lesson engages your critical thinkers and challenges them to use multiple perspective, think reflectively, close read and annotate their lyrics, research the meaning behind their choice, and practice metacognitive skills.

There are four tasks for students to complete during this analysis:

Task 1 is a reader response analysis that requires students to find song lyrics and paste them into a Google Doc. Because these tasks are editable, if your students don’t have access to a device, you could change this requirement and ask them to bring a copy of the lyrics to school for the assignment.

Task 2 guides students to read and analyze their lyrics formally.

Task 3 instructs students to research the meaning behind the song related to the writer/artist.

Task 4 is a metacogntive task that requires students to evaluate their connections with the song.

An example of a completed analysis is included with this download.
