Music is so important to students and I think its use as a focusing and calming element in the classroom is super important and motivating to students. But let’s be honest the music that even the coolest teacher might pick isn’t what many students would pick. So, I created a song request sheet that allows student to get the music they want and sneaks in an extra writing opportunity which is something teachers want.
Personally, I keep a Spotify playlist called the request list (one for all classes to keep it simple), If a student writes a compelling request (and the song is appropriate) I put in on the playlist to be played when we have group or independent work time in class.
I used increase writing opportunities as one of my goal on my evaluation. This was one of the ways I achieved that goal. At the end of last year my playlist was 70 songs long and I had over a 50% denial rate, so it added up to a lot of extra writing for my students. A real win win.
NOTE: I have decided to include the Word Documents that the PDFs are created from so that if you would like to customize the unit for your classroom you can. However, I have used formatting and custom fonts that are not standard with many versions of Microsoft office. This may mean that opening them with a different version of office or without the same fonts installed will throw the formatting off. If so it may take some work to adapt them in your class. I am including them as an extra and would ask that I am not rated on the usability of the Word Docs. Since they are not the finished product, but an extra.
