This packet contains over 80 different songs/poems, and EACH poem is laid out three different ways to suit your needs (a sample of each one is included in the preview):
2) modern - with a large graphic in the back, and
3) with a space above/next to the poem for an illustration.
All pages indicate if it is a poem, or a song. All the songs go to a familiar tune, such as the itsy bitsy spider, jingle bells, etc.
The songs/poems will cover most classroom themes and holidays so you can coordinate them with what you are learning. See the preview for the complete list!
While there are many ways to use this resource, I use it to work on and highlight the various phonics skills and sight words we are working on. Each week I add one new poem to the student's notebooks (I found composition books work best) and after we read all the previous poems for fluency practice and the increase our confidence as readers, we read and visualize what the new poem in about, to draw a corresponding illustration. The students are also required to circle/highlight a different thing in the text each week. In the beginning of the year we may circle all the letter "g's" or the word "the", but by the end of the year we will be circling "magic e" words, particular vowel teams, etc. It really is all about doing what is best for you and your students.
My class really enjoys doing song and poetry notebooks every week, and are always excited to see what the next poem will be - plus they notice something new in the poems every time as their skills grow!
