Singing together is a great way to build community! At the end of each day in my classroom, the student helper takes our class songbook, flips through it, and chooses a song. Then we sing together before packing up to go home.
This homemade book features 15 titles of well-known children’s songs such as “On Top of Spaghetti” and “Clementine.” The hand-drawn illustrations will help pre-readers identify each song as they flip through the book.
This resource is great for pre-K, kindergarten, and grade 1.
Please note, my drawing is not perfect! If you are looking for auto CAD clip art, this is not the resource for you! My drawing has a lot of character and is accessible to young students.
How to use this resource:
1. Print it.
2. Cut each page in half lengthwise.
3. Laminate the pages (optional).
4. Bind the book (I recommend with one metal binder ring).
5. At the end of the school day each day (or whenever you need a 5-minute “brain break”), ask your student helper to choose a song for the class to sing.
6. Enjoy your daily sing-along for years to come!
I have found in the past that sometimes one popular song gets picked very often! In my current classroom, that’s “The Three Little Kittens.” If you find that the children are always picking the same song, try saying, “The students will pick the first song and then the teacher and TA will take turns picking the second song.” This way you can add more wonderful songs to your children’s repertoire.
If your students have specific classroom jobs, try adding “song leader” to your jobs list. The “song leader” is the person who chooses the song.
I recommend downloading “The Hokey Pokey” and “Shake My Sillies Out” on iTunes so that the students can have some background music for these awesome numbers. You can enjoy the other songs without background music.
The first few times you sing a song, many kids in your class might not know it. But keep at it, and soon everyone will be joining in... and even singing these songs at snack time, recess, cleanup time....
Thanks for looking, and happy singing ☺
