My students have a hard time analyzing poetry. Heck, even I have a hard time analyzing poetry sometimes! But with this "Song of the Day" project, they will JUMP at the chance to analyze their favorite song! In this project, students will choose their favorite song (school-appropriate, of course!) to analyze and create a presentation for their classmates. When given the chance to analyze context, figurative language, imagery, tone, theme, point-of-view, conflict, and word choices from their favorite songs, it makes these skills much more engaging, especially to students who dislike poetry.
This downloadable zip file includes the full project guidelines, SC-state standards for 6th grade addressed (very similar to Common Core standards), a grading rubric, and a sample Keynote using the lyrics to "True Colors" to give your students a sample to model theirs after).
I used "Sign-Up Genius" for them to sign up for their songs! I previewed the lyrics to each song to make sure it was school-appropriate, and this led to a few good conversations between myself, students, and even parents about what they are choosing to listen to! We presented one a day over the span of a month or so (depending on class size).
