"Song of the Trees" is a short novella by Mildred D. Taylor. It is appropriate for upper elementary or middle school students. The novella tells the story of the Logan family (found in most of Taylor's books) and their struggle to find courage in the face of racism. The story takes place in Mississippi during the Great Depression. The father has moved away to take a job and the rest of the family stays home. When some local lumbermen come to buy some the family's trees, the children are exposed to an awful fact: racism. the story tells this family's struggle and triumph.
I complete this unit with my seventh grade students. I have a class copy of the book, but it could be done as a read aloud as well. I hope you find this useful in your classroom.
