This versatile cross-curricular project is the perfect culminating unit activity for any Poetry Unit. It can be adapted to any grade level as well as to any course of study: early American poetry, modern American poetry, British poetry, world poetry, etc. After studying and being assessed on the poetry selections and the terminology for your unit, your students will then apply what they have learned to something that is relevant to their lives: their music.
The musicality of poetic verse is not always appreciated by the average student. When students see poetic devices come to life in the lyrics of the music they love, that real-world connection can make this genre of literature come to life as well!
Students will actually teach their song to their peers as they apply their knowledge to a song lyric. They display their knowledge, technological skills, and public speaking skills as they share their musical choices with the class.
