Use these 20 songs set to the melody of familiar children’s tunes to target functional phrases. Songs target communication for a variety of purposes including requesting, gaining attention, asking for help, labeling, rejection, directing actions, protesting, greetings/salutations, asking questions and answering questions.
Target phrases are highlighted in color with the therapist/parent part in black. To help the child produce the phrases sing through the whole song several times. Next sing the song and pause before you get to the child’s part and give them an expectant look to prompt them to fill in their part. Be sure to use in real situations and follow through with the child’s request, protest etc. for motivation and to develop communication with intent.
Be sure to pair songs with visual signed cues (i.e., a sign for "all done" or "finished" when singing the all done song) from the beginning. When the child is able to say the phrases fade out the songs and prompt phrases with signed cues only.
Ideal for young communicators or communicators of all ages with cognitive disorders, autism or developmental delays.
