This is one of my student’s most memorable learning activities. I can say that because at the beginning of June (2013) I ran into some students that had been in one of my English classes 15 years ago. One of the students specifically remembered doing this activity and also enjoying it. She said that she still has her poster.
This learning activity is a creative way to address some of the common core state standards, specifically RL.1, W.2, W.4, W.9, L.1, L.2, and L.5. The activity also provides a great deal of student choice, which is always a plus!
The digital download includes a customizable student handout, lesson plan (outline of how I teach this activity and the time involved), customizable full-page rubric, and non-customizable (PDF format) half-page rubrics.
This is a good activity for the beginning of the school year as a way to better get to know students, and to use as a formative assessment of their writing skills, time management skills, and knowledge of figurative language/literary elements.
This could also be used any time during the year when you feel the students need some creativity, or as a review of figurative language/literary elements.
Thanks so much for considering! Thanks for making a difference!
