Review for Short Answer Test Assessment

Teach your students to write short answer questions and to use a rubric to evaluate their answers. Lesson includes SOAPStone questions and multiple choice questions about Sonnet 9 and the Great War.

You may use the powerpoints in whole class instruction or use activities in the lesson to divide the students into small groups.

12 Poetry terms are identified in powerpoint slides. Interactive notebook pages for the terms are included along with directions about how to cut and glue them.

Poetry terms studied include:
alliteration
foreshadowing
hyperbole
irony
metaphor
onomatopoeia
personification
repetition
simile
symbol
oxymoron
free verse

Write a sonnet. Shakespeare wrote a number of sonnets; now it’s your students turn to learn about iambic pentameter and rhyme scheme. An example of one of Shakespeare’s sonnets is given with an analysis and explanation of the rhyme pattern. You may choose to incorporate creative poetry writing and ask students to participate in reading their own sonnets in Author’s Chair.
