Product Description

This is a set of print-and-go notes on Sonnets. There is one page of guided notes which can be used to pull the essential elements from Thomas C. Foster's chapter “If It's Square It's a Sonnet” (from How to Read Poetry Like a Professor or the first edition of How to Read Literature Like a Professor) or can be used with lecture notes. It is not necessary to have access to Foster's text to use this lesson. Students can then practice sonnet analysis on two sonnets.

This is part of a Sonnets Mini Unit that is intended for AP Literature and Composition Students or Pre-AP English students, however, it could be used in most high school English classes.

This Set of Notes / Mini-lesson Includes

  • a set of guided notes on Sonnet form, specifying the differences between the Petrarchan Sonnet and the Shakespearean Sonnet
  • Guided “How to Read Poem Notes”
  • two sonnets for close analysis—Sonnet 60 by Shakespeare and “September” by Helen Hunt Jackson (a Petrarchan sonnet)
  • detailed key of the sonnet notes—this can function as lecture notes
  • detailed key for each of the sonnets—both are fully annotated to note their sonnet components and brief analysis is included

This set of notes is included in the Sonnets Mini Unit Bundle.
