This is a great sentence combining activity, incorporating sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. It requires students to use their knowledge of sentence structure and punctuation to creatively and strategically combine sentences. Another skill I like to emphasize with this activity is sentence starters. I encourage students to use verbs, adjectives, prepositional phrases, and adverbs to start their sentences, rather than nouns, pronouns, or “the.”
Students (and the teacher!) really have fun with this activity, getting creative and adding their own “flair” to their sentences. This can be a stand-alone lesson, or a springboard to a unit on descriptive writing. Students’ favorite sentences can be turned into posters, developed into descriptive paragraphs, or even descriptive compositions.
I truly love teaching, and I hope that comes through in my lessons, activities, and units. Please check out my TPT store for other engaging Language Arts lessons: Live Love Learn
