This is an Internet WebQuest designed to be used as an introduction to Sophocles' Oedipus plays. In this WebQuest, students will be asked to complete three tasks (The Life of Sophocles, Greek Life, and Greek Theatre); for each task, they will navigate through a series of websites, read important information about each topic, and answer questions on worksheets (the URL you will need to access the WebQuest is written at the top of each worksheet). The worksheets total 5 pages altogether, and I provide an answer key for each page. In the interest of saving paper, I have also uploaded the worksheets (not the answer keys, of course) to the website itself, so, if you desire, students can download the worksheet before starting each task, then type their answers directly onto it and either print it out or send it to you digitally.
Each task covers important background information that is specifically focused on the plays themselves. In the first task, students explore basic biographical information about the author. In the second task, students learn about ancient Greek government and geography, as well as about burial rites and a few of the gods and goddesses that are referenced in the plays. In the final task, students learn about Greek theatre - performances, actors, and masks.
I have used this as both an at-home independent research activity and a collaborative, computer-lab task. In both instances, it has been very effective in preparing students for the plays while engaging them by allowing them to work on the Internet and explore a number of interesting websites. I have used this as both an introduction to the complete trilogy of plays with my Honors students, as well as with my classes who solely read Oedipus Rex or Antigone. It has been effective in all cases.
Please note that I created the website myself (the URL will be at the top of each worksheet). I used a free web hosting site, so there are advertisements, but nothing that is inappropriate to students. The websites I link to are all professional or educational sites.
