In order to both prepare for the new Standards Based Grading initiative in my district and to ensure that I am hitting all of the Common Core State Standards throughout the year, I have divided my sophomore English curriculum by standard and unit. This document is a representation of that process.
I have ensured that each state standards is covered at least once. I tried to limit the number of standards each unit covers so as to overwhelm my students or myself. For instance, there are at least a dozen of standards that could be taught while teaching "To Kill a Mockingbird" but I limited the amount that I'll be focusing on to seven.
All Common Core State Standards for Grade 10 are on the spreadsheet as well as the numerical value (per semester) that the standard is taught and the numerical value of standards taught per unit.
Units represented are: "To Kill a Mockingbird," Prezi Presentation, Narrative, Research Paper, Short Stories, "Fahrenheit 451," Nonfiction Unit, Grammar, Literary Analysis, Intro to Persuasion, Julius Caesar, Fallacy Unit, Poetry, Persuasive Paper, Persuasive Speech, and "Lord of the Flies."
You could either use this spreadsheet in full (if your sophomore curriculum is similar to mine) or modify it as needed and use only part. Either way, it is a great starting place for standards based grading and instruction. Do you know what standards each of your units are responsible for?
