Preschool and low language level students need to learn categorization skills. These skills help them organize their words as well as give them ways to describe.
File folder activities provide practice during direct instruction or independent work time. They can be used over and over with no additional prep. Plus they are tactile and fun!
How can we combine the need for learning categories and the ease of file folder activities? Sort by 4s!
Sort by 4s is the perfect sorting activity for students who have already reached their goals for sorting by two but need extra categorizing help. Sort by 4s provides four clear categories that divide items by attributes, function, or location.
Check out the blog post here INCLUDING a video showing you how to set up this fantastic activity!
There are TWO ways to use this resource (digital and printable):
1. As a printable PDF that you create into file folder activities.
As a file folder activity, Sort by 4s can be done by verbal and non-verbal students and can focus on either receptive or expressive language. In addition, although there is initial prep-work, once the sorting folders are set up, they can be used forever without any additional copying, printing, or stapling. I love having things on my shelf and ready to go at a moment’s notice!

❤️ "Easy to put together and great for language building! I even send with families or paras for extra practice"
❤️ "Great activity for early categories! I'm really getting into file folder activities. They seem so simple, but kids seem to find them really engaging, and I LOVE that once I prep them once, they're ready to go forever! Thanks for sharing."
