Students must sort picture cards under headers by the number of sounds in each word (three, four or five sounds). After sorting the picture cards they have to spell the words on the appropriate worksheet and use the words to complete sentences. This activity incorporates phonemic awareness, spelling, reading and comprehension all in one. All of the words contain short vowels (cvc, ccvc, cvcc, ccvcc). This is a great center activity or small group activity.

4 sounds- drum, plug, trap, raft, belt, golf, sled, hand
5 sounds- stump, stamp, swept, scalp, craft, slept, stand, plant
