Bring the five animal classes to life in your classroom with these vivid animal flash cards! Work on visual discrimination and problem solving skills as you decide whether the animals are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, or fish.
This activity comes with:
-66 animal picture cards, with the name of the animal and its classification (mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or fish) on the reverse side.
-6 information cards: one describing all the animal classifications at a glance, and 5 more detailed cards, one for each of the classifications (one for mammals, one for birds etc.)
-a visual tree of taxonomic rank for the classes of animals
Use the information cards describing the different animal classifications to introduce the activity so students can draw on this knowledge while they sort the cards under their headers.
Each header has a different coloured border, and each picture card has a reverse side with the animal name and class written in the same colour as its classification header so that children who cannot read can check their work at the end of the activity.
The tree of taxonomic rank card can be used with enthusiastic students who are interested in the evolutionary differences between the different classes of animals.
Print the first three pages single-sided, and print the rest of the PDF double-sided so that the animal and information cards have a reverse side. Ensure that the scale of your print job is set to 100% so that the front and back of the cards line up and cut to be 3x3in. I recommend printing one test page double-sided first, as all printers are different. Once printed, cut along the dashed lines, laminate, and you're ready to go!
