I love this activity. It really gets the students thinking about the rules for integers.
Students sort problems into categories for how to solve:
Add and keep the sign
Subtract and take the sign of the larger absolute value
Add the additive inverse
Multiply and the product will be negative
Multiply and the product will be positive
Divide and the quotient will be negative
Divide and the quotient will be positive
There are many ways that you could use this, but here is how I use it.
• Print the headings on one color of paper. Print the problems on a different color of paper. Cut and store in zip lock bags. I have about 15 sets.
• Students are in pairs.
• Students place the headings at top of their desks (usually covers 2 desks).
• Students then decide where each problem goes and places the card under the correct heading.
• I quickly scan the cards to make sure they are correct. If not, I pull the cards that are not in the correct heading, and they try again.
I use this as a warm up activity for about 5 minutes. The first students that finish usually help me check the others.
