This is a great activity to use when introducing nouns. I like to begin talking about nouns by providing a definition ("a noun can be a person, place, or thing"), having the students brainstorm various nouns, then having the students sort nouns by category.
-Noun “brainstorming” chart
-54 noun cards (18 “person” cards, 18 “place” cards, 18 “thing” cards)
**Each noun card contains a SymbolStix graphic representation
-3 noun sorting mats (person, place, and thing)
Using this download:
-Print, laminate, and cut apart all noun cards and mats
-Begin lesson by brainstorming nouns in various categories (person, place, or thing). You may want to do this on your board, or you can use the provided chart.
-Have students sort nouns by category
Additional suggestions for use:
-After sorting nouns, have students use the cards to make sentences (use a “person” card as the subject, then combine with a “place” or “thing” card to complete the sentence).
-Have students use descriptive language to talk about noun cards.
