This activity is called “Category Crazies”. It is designed for small groups (4 or less) or partner play. It is a categorizing and ordering activity, which is part of the measurement and data common core state standards. There are letters, numbers, and monsters cards, in six colors and sorting mats. Groups draw cards, look them over, and decide on four categories They proceed to sort the items into four piles on the mats. When they are done, they will count how many objects are in each pile and record the results on their recording sheet. Then they move on to the cut and paste worksheet, to order the categories from largest group to smallest group, by count.
This activity aligns with the following Common Core State Standard:
K.MD.3. Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. (Limit category counts to be less
than or equal to 10.)
